Are You Making Job Candidates Jump Through Too Many Hoops?

Hey there! As experts in all things related to hiring accountants, we’ve seen it all. From the laid-back coffee chat interviews to the ones that feel like an obstacle course, complete with face-to-face grillings, quizzes, role plays, presentations, the works!

So here’s the deal. We wanted to have a little chat about finding that sweet spot between making sure you’re hiring the right person and not turning the interview process into an episode of a reality TV show.

Too much? Too little? How do you know when it’s just right?

Well, a lot of it boils down to how badly you need to snag a top candidate, who’s holding the cards (you or them), and when you might be going overboard with your demands.

Let’s start with the basics. What’s the non-negotiable stuff you gotta have?

– A CV that’s up to snuff
– A quick check to make sure they’re who they say they are
– Making sure they can legally work in the UK
– At least one face-to-face or virtual meet-up
– Checking out their references

Alright, next up, what’s the gig?

If we’re talking Junior Accountants or even Seniors, you might just need the basics, maybe a second chat or a little skills test.

Higher up the ladder? Now it gets interesting. For the big cheeses, you’ll want to dig deeper. Multiple interviews, understanding how they think, how they jive with the team – all that jazz.

At the partnership level? Buckle up, because it’s going to be a longer ride. Formal interviews, dinners, the whole nine yards. If money’s involved, well, then you both want to make sure everything’s on the up and up.

But hold up! We’ve seen times when the process goes off the rails. Asking candidates to whip up presentations or solve problems like unpaid interns? Not cool. It’s like asking an artist to paint you a masterpiece but only paying if you like it.

And don’t forget, looking for a new job isn’t a walk in the park. It’s stressful, expensive, and can mess with their current job. Push too hard, and they might just walk away.

We’ve seen it happen more times than we’d like to admit. A candidate decides it’s just not worth it and heads for the door. And with plenty of other fish in the sea, they can find a place that’s not quite so demanding.

So if you’re the one piling on the tests, asking for the moon in the interviews, and being super rigid about when and where they happen, maybe it’s time to take a step back. Could you be scaring off the talent you need? Think about it!
